MORE DESERT WILDLIFE

Carlsbad Caverns National Park is a great place to view a diversity of desert wildlife in addition to the bats. One can encounter the better-known residents (lizards, snakes, and tarantulas) along with a few surprises like firefly larvae (glowworms). An especially good place to view wildlife at the park, even in the middle of the summer, is Rattlesnake Springs, an oasis of life in the desert. Here one can watch and listen to an assortment of birds, mammals, and frogs. The site is so popular it has been called the unofficial birding capital of New Mexico. See table 8 for desert wildlife to look for at the park:
